Basic Obedience Class
K9 Healers teaches the Volhard
Motivational Method. This method was developed by Jack and
Wendy Volhard who have numerous years of experience in canine
behavior, nutrition, and training. The method is best described
by Jack and Wendy:
"Our goal is to establish that mutually rewarding
relationship between owner and dog all of us seek. Each of these
relationships has its nuances and each is unique, but to achieve
that harmony between man and dog, we need to have a thorough
understanding of canine behavior. A dog quickly learns to understand
its owner, but many times the owner needs help in understanding
his or her dog. To help this owner we have developed the Motivational
Method of training, an approach to training for people who like
their dogs and have them first and foremost as pets and companions.
"
K9 Healers teaches this method because it teaches
the owner as well as the dog. It helps to form a bond of understanding.
K9 Healers also encourages
students to bring their family members to the classes to watch
the classes so they can learn what the proper techniques are to
help train their new family companion. Gail, Marnie, and Jen believe
that they can help people understand their canine companions and
strengthen the bond between them for the time they are together.
What makes K9 Healers unique is that the classes are taught in
Nursing Homes which brings to community into the facility as well
as allowing the Residents to see and talk about dogs and former
pets. This is a winning combination for students as well as the
residents of the facilities. Our classes are fun and motivational
for everyone involved.
The
classes are 7 weeks long for dogs that are appropriate to train
in a residential facility. K-9 Healers classes are held in Long-term
Care Facilities. On Saturday mornings classes are held at the
Fairport Baptist Home in Fairport and on Thursday nights at the
Homestead Nursing Home in Penn Yan.
The fee for the 7 weeks of class
is $95.00. We will provide you with a fitted nylon training collar
and a homework packet. Please bring a clean dog, 6 foot cotton
or nylon leash, a fanny pack, and soft, bite-sized treats. We suggest
hot dogs, cheese, cooked pasta, etc.
Dog
training should be fun for both you and your dog. You will teach
your dog how to heel on a loose leash, come when called, to sit
and lay down on command, and how to behave appropriately in public.
Our class will increase the relationship between you and your
dog, and the Residents enjoy watching the training process.·

Dog obedience classes are offered in long-term
care facilities. This allows the team to train amidst adaptive
equipment and allows the residents to enjoy the community and
their dogs.
